Since Girls' Generation member Hyoyeon started her DJ career under the name Hyo, she has gained a lot of international popularity for many of her songs, like her biggest hit "Sober" English version has reached 50M views as of today! The song is so popular that until today it was getting from 250-500K views daily despite being released years ago.
Millions of people who had the song on their playlist came to a shock this week when they saw that SM entertainment had requested on their own for Youtube to put 19+ age restriction on both versions of "Sober" despite the MV having 0 nudity or violence. At the moment the music videos look like this:
Due to the 19+ age restriction, no one other than the ones with a youtube channel and 19 can watch the MVs. SONE, the fans of Girls' Generation, claim that SM entertainment is sabotaging Hyoyeon and her solo career on purpose. The SNSD member just days ago guested on "Radio Star" and confirmed that she has been getting lots of international love calls. Refusing to believe it's anything else considering the timing being exactly on when the English version reaches 50M views, fans demand a statement to be released by the company as the restriction has stayed for more than a week now too long for it to be a simple mistake. Fans posted a graph on the daily views from the last week and it showed that the English version daily views are cut by more than 80% reaching the lowest daily views to date which are 48K views.
Here are some comments from youtube and social media:
"Wow can't believe they put an age restriction on a song about body positivity that has 0 nudity or violence"
"Bruh, EXO, Red Velvet and NCT MVs majority show more skin, more hints about violent story lines but no restriction on them."
"Exactly when she was gonna hit 50M if they did not put the age restriction, 1 day became a week."
"Okay so Kai can flash abs, Taemin can be sexy, chicken fights in EXO Lotto, fights in Monster, NCT fighting, THEY CAN HIP TRUST, meanwhile Hyoyeon does body positivity, inclusivity and gets this sexism.."
"The female body is a crime, a sin, might as well tell all the girls to cover their whole body and face because showing more than that is 18+ rated that is the message I am getting. Feminists? Where are you now?"
"Is Hyoyeon gonna leave SM? She had to defend herself with her own statement because the one SM released was 3 sentences when the burning sun thing happened"
"Oh!GG will need to change the Oh! part. Might not be 5 anymore"
What do you think about this situation? What could possibly be the reason for SM entertainment to put an age restriction on "Sober"? Share your thoughts on Twitter and our Youtube channel!
