The acting industry is tough, competitive, but respected, so it's no surprise idols want to enter the industry. There is one thing they face when they try this new career path, and that is the popular opinion that K-POP idols cannot act. Is this opinion justified, or is it all made up? I will show you 6 opinion from netizens and you can make up your mind.
Here is PART 1 of list made by netizens.
- 3 idols who have overcome the stigma and have gained respect as actors both by the general public and senior actors.
- 3 idols that demonstrated such bad acting skills that even their fans admitted that watching them act was painful.
1. 2PM Junho
These days, Junho is recognized as an amazing actor by the general public and critics. The idol turned actor has never disappointed viewers as he always did his best in each acting project. The actor started his new career while still promoting with his group 2PM. After building up his skills through smaller gigs, he took part in his first 2013 movie "Cold eyes" which was an instant hit and gathered massive revenue. He has also starred in successful dramas like "Good manager", "Rain or shine", and "Confession". Netizens describe Junho as someone who just naturally gives of that famous actor vibes, so they never really had a stigma towards him because he had already made a permanent place for himself in the acting industry.
2. EXO D.O
D.O was already famous among the general public before his first acting role because of his group EXO who is one of the most famous artists domestically and internationally. EXO themselves have talked about how popular D.O is as an actor with fellow member Baekhyun jokingly saying "I feel jealous of D.O even the elderly ladies recognize him". All jokes aside his popularity in the acting industry is always the main topic when he gets to guests on variety shows like "Knowing bros" and "Running man". Just over one year ago, rumors of huge deals being offered to him to leave EXO and SM entertainment surfaced online which were so believable that the company had to release a statement about it. Over the last 3-4 years, D.O has won over 30 acting awards as best supporting role, best actor, best new actor and many more from the most respected award shows - The Baeksang Arts Awards, Blue Dragon Film Awards, Buil Film awards, The Seoul Awards, Asia Artist Awards, International festival Macau, and more. He is most famous for his roles in "It's okay that's love", "My annoying brother", "Cart", "Pure love", "Along with the Gods", "100 Days my Prince" and "Swing Kids". When it comes to D.O Kyungsoo, everyone can agree that he is extremely talented in singing and acting, so it would be a waste if he does anything less than both.
3. ZE:A Siwan
Like the previous two on the list, Siwan started his acting career humbly through smaller roles like cameos and supporting roles. The formed idol, even while he was jumbling both careers, never left anything less than a good impression on viewers and always gave his best. These days other than his fans from the idol days, Siwan is known as a very desirable actor for acting projects. His most recent acting projects are dramas you most likely have seen or heard of even if they are not the dramas you would usually watch. "Hell is other people" from 2019 in which he starred in with Lee Dong-Wook, is still the talk of the town. Fans of the drama joke that both male leads had such intense chemistry that it outshined the chemistry between the character of Siwan and his girlfriend. You might also know his other acting projects like "The King in Love" and his most recent "Run on" that should air 2020. This idol turned actor is someone who's acting abilities just can't be questioned.
When it comes to the idols can't act stigma, some idols just can't escape it, be it due to bad acting or poor choice of an acting project. Here are the idols that have such bad acting skills that even their fans were dissapointed.
1. AOA Seolhyun
This AOA member is famous for her commercials and beauty but do you know she did acting? One of her most famous roles to this day is her role as the main lead in "Orange Marmalade", which was based on a Webtoon with the same name. Her first big role gave her the first big criticism from netizens and fans of the webtoon. One of the first things many pointed out was her lack of ability to display the needed emotions, with many saying they have never seen a more emotionless face. Looks like, it's something she still struggles even today. A recent Korean youtube video with over 500K views criticized her lack of ability to portray emotions, saying her face looked frozen 90% of the time. So far Seolhyun has starred in multiple acting projects like "My country" and most recently "Day and Night" which is supposed to air 2020. What do you think of Seolhyun and her acting ability?
2. EXO Baekhyun
Sooner or later, most idols who get the chance try out acting at least once, and EXO is no exception. When it comes to member Baekhyun, it seems like according to netizens and fans, he should stick to signing and should avoid acting. His supporting role in "Moon Lover: Scarlet Heart Ryeo" as Prince Wang Eun had a lot of netizens criticizing his acting, saying that he was not even trying. When it comes to fans many of them shared that even if his acting was not the best even in their own eyes, it's hard to judge his acting since the role he played is not that different from the way he is usually seen acting playfully with EXO. The drama itself is popular even though at the time it aired, it was not appreciated like it should have been according to fans of the drama. With only a few acting experiences, maybe it's too early to judge his full potential as an actor negatively, but Baekhyun should be careful when choosing roles in the future.
3. BLOCK B P.O
P.O member of the 2nd generation boy group Block B recently came under fire for cringy acting in the popular drama "Hotel Del Luna". In the drama, P.O plays the role of a clumsy employee of the hotel who the writers may have intended for comedy purposes. The idol has also had supporting roles in other dramas like "Love alert" and "Encounter". His other supporting roles also tend to be the same type of person a clumsy, sometimes idiotic side character, which may be the reason why netizens think he has no acting skills. P.O has a deep voice which could serve him well in a lot of darker genre drama, which could prove if it really was his lack of acting skills or just the character he had to play. Currently P.O is starring in a new drama called "More than friends" as a supporting character. The drama has started airing on the 25th of September, so please do make sure to check out the drama and show your support for P.O and his development as an actor!
