On the 25th of September, the SM-Capitol K-POP group made out of Shinee, EXO, and NCT members called SuperM released their 1st full album "SuperOne". The album contains 15 music tracks that include the 3 MV tracks - 100, One (Monster and Infinity), and Tiger inside. Overall the album has received mixed reviews, both negative and positive, with the negative seemingly being the majority, which showed both on international and domestic charts. If you want to know why this album is getting such mixed reviews, I am giving a summary because 15 songs are way more than what a k-pop album reviewer is usedThe first mistake the companies made with this album is choosing the wrong title track and pre-releases, as 100 was disliked from the get-go, and shawols, exo-l, and nctzens all seem to agree to it, with the majority explaining the song was just the members shouting 100. The opinion must have reached the members and companies, or they saw the bad or to say lack of charting and assured fans in a video that the next song Tiger inside is way better. When it comes to Tiger inside, it's a huge step-up from 100, but it still did not reach the expectations fans had for it but MV style-wise it was extremely eye-pleasing no doubt the best MV out of the 3 in every aspect but charting wise it still failed to do decently especially for an SM group. After the two pre-releases, the title track One (Monster and Infinity) was released, this time fans knew what to expect as there now seems to be a pattern of what type of sound SuperM is always going for in their music. One is a mix of two songs, Monster and Infinity, and it is good that they made it obvious in the title because one of the first thoughts when listening to the song is that it's similar to when you just click a random time-stamp when listening to a song and just skip suddenly to the good part. The whole song felt like it had a few pinches of Shinee, EXO, and NCT or to be precise maybe they aimed for a mix of EXO - Monster, Shinee - Sherlock, and NCT - Simon says it did not work out it seems. Similar to 100 and Tiger inside this song did not top the charts either in fact all 3 songs debuted on low on Billboard and did not even chart on the majority of South Korean charts. The highest place the songs charted was 12-70, then they quickly dropped out of the top 100 and top 200 on charts like Bugs. In total, out of 7 major charts, the songs and album failed to chart the top 100 and top 200 in 4 out of the 7(FLO, Naver, Mnet, Soribada, Bugs, Melon, Genie). The charting surprised everyone considering SuperM got to promote on shows in the US like Ellen, for Japan music shows, and the same in South Korea and had huge billboards promoting the group in the U.S which most likely cost a fortune. Leaving out the bad about the title tracks, let's talk about the album songs. All 3 fandoms seem to agree that certain songs are similar songs to the ones in EXO, NCT, Shinee albums and I do agree. The album songs are definitely better than 100 and Tiger inside and One, so I too am confused why those 3 songs were chosen as title tracks. The album itself is worth the price considering there are so many songs, but some of the songs sounded as if they were put in just for the sake of the album seeming like a nice deal. Dangerous woman in particular to a non-fan sounds painful to the ear and is indeed the worst song of the album. Originally hearing about it made me hyped up but what was delivered was just cringy so maybe SM and Capitol should have saved it for Oh!GG, Girls generation, or Red Velvet. I still wonder if SuperM members cringed when they had to record it, Taemin has a nice voice but the song does not suit him, same with Baekhyun and the arrangement for the song made it only worse.
Overall I really have many nice things to write about it but the bad is way more and some things did leave an impression a bad one at that. When it comes to SuperM and EXO member Kai it became obvious to me while listening to the album songs that the producers have no idea what to do with his voice but they have to give him lives because his fans(EXO-L) will get angry if he is only given 1-5 seconds so they give him a flat line in every song while the other members do get some variety in their lines. In SuperM I have to say the EXO member shines way less and seems less passionate and confident hopefully they will find a way to use his voice like it's done with EXO. Anyway excluding that SuperM - SuperOne album is a decent try at an album but not impressive considering how big your expectations get from these promotions. Every time SuperM appears and makes a release you definitely get a sense of they are constantly trying to make a sale and convince you they are the best by just claiming they are and nothing else. Similar to haggling at a market you have to buy because they make it look so as if they are giving you the best deal and only the best product when in reality it's not like that. After listening to 15 songs I do think it's too much at some point you just want to skip to the next song so it feels like the quality is left behind for quantity because songs like Dangerous woman should have never happened or at least it should have been recorded again.
